Historical fiction is a genre of literature or film that tells fictional stories set in a real historical period, often featuring actual historical events, settings, or figures. While the historical context is grounded in reality, the characters, dialogue, or plot may be invented or dramatized to create a compelling narrative.
“Interlock” is a 1971 Malaysian novel by National Laureate Abdullah Hussain, recounting the fictionalised narratives of three protagonists during Malaysia’s pre-colonial era. It was allocated as part of the Malaysian KOMSAS syllabus for one academic year in 2011, being recalled soon after. The novel received widespread backlash from Indian and Chinese minority groups due to its usage of offensive racial terminology and inaccurate portrayals of the minority experience.
